A traditional and essential instrument for preparing matcha, the chasen is a piece carved from a single piece of bamboo, used to whisk green tea powder in a small amount of water.
With a rapid back-and-forth motion, the beaten tea takes the form of a fine emulsion such as that found in the Japanese tea ceremony: chanoyu.
